Off The Clock Meets Off Their Rocker
A few minutes later, I’m in the pet aisle picking out treats for my puppy when I feel someone jabbing me hard in the shoulder. I jumped and twinged my biopsy site. I turn and—oh joy—it’s one of our worst regulars. I take an AirPod out and she’s already mid-tirade: Grocery Store, I Don’t Work Here, UK | Right | August 7, 2025
I popped into the shop I work at a couple of days ago to grab a few things for dinner. Thanks to my employee discount, it’s cheaper than ordering in. I’m currently on doctor’s orders to take it easy—just starting to be mobile again after a biopsy—so I wasn’t in for much.
To be clear, I was obviously not at work. I was wearing loose cotton trousers that looked like pyjama bottoms, an oversized hoodie, and had AirPods in. I basically looked like a street urchin with a loyalty card. The only thing that gives me away to regulars is my hair—it’s all the colours of a galaxy smoothie.
I stopped to chat with a colleague about how the biopsy went. She’s new and quickly asked me where something was, so I told her and put my AirPods back in. No big deal. An old lady shuffled off nearby, but I thought nothing of it.
A few minutes later, I’m in the pet aisle picking out treats for my puppy when I feel someone jabbing me hard in the shoulder. I jumped and twinged my biopsy site. I turn and—oh joy—it’s one of our worst regulars.
I take an AirPod out and she’s already mid-tirade:
Customer: “—been standing there for five minutes trying to get your attention! Ignoring customers is rude! You can help out your coworker, but not a customer? What kind of employee are you?!”
I just blink at her.
Customer: “I need that heavy bag of cat litter off the top shelf. Get it down for me!”
Me: “I’m not allowed to lift heavy things right now, and I’m also off the clock. Store policy says we can’t do that when we’re not on shift. If you need help, please grab someone who’s working.”
Customer: “That’s a ridiculous excuse! You just don’t want to help me! I’m getting your manager and—”
At that point, I just… picked up my dog treats and walked away. I ducked into the crisps aisle and, by pure luck, ran straight into my boss.
Me:*Quickly.* “Hey, just a heads up, I’ve managed to anger a customer.”
Right on cue, she stomps up, finger jabbing the air.
Customer: “This one refused to help me! I don’t care if she’s not working, she works here and—”
Manager: “Ma’am, she is not obligated to help you when she’s off the clock. Please ask one of the on-shift team if you need assistance.”
My boss subtly gestures for me to leave.
The customer keeps shouting as I escape, insisting I should be fired. I pay for my stuff, laugh about it with my coworker at the till, and get out of there before round two of Customer vs. Reality kicks off.
