The Calgary Flames are all set when it comes to goalie depth. It is yet to be decided if Devin Cooley or Ivan Prosvetov will be backing up Dustin Wolf. I can’t see the Flames going down a path to acquire Joonas Korpisalo – a player who made his stance on being a backup loud and clear last season. He wants more playing time, and the crease belongs to Wolf. No one is coming in and taking that.
Verdict: This feels like a last resort. Unless it comes to that, no.
Andersson heads to the Lone Star State
Is this an overpay? I think the Flames make out like bandits here. Getting both Mavrik Bourque and Lian Bichsel would be huge for the Flames. Adding a young centre and another young defenceman would make this rebuild feel a little more secure. Ultimately, I don’t think you get both.
Verdict: Yes, I like this a lot.
Could you imagine?
I think Calgary would need to give up something else to make this happen. Rasmus Andersson and Yegor Sharangovich are both coming off down years, and there’s no promise that either will bounce back. The Dallas Stars don’t have to trade Jason Robertson, and Bichsel is young. The Flames would more than likely make the playoffs if they had some consistent scoring from Robertson.
Verdict: Yes, I think Conroy has to throw in a little more.
Fresh start for the captain?
Does Mikael Backlund request a trade if the Flames’ season goes south? There is a world where the captain approaches the organization with his desire to chase a championship. Backlund is nearly 37 years old, and after battling injuries throughout the season, I wouldn’t blame him if this is his last run. We know the Flames won’t approach this unless the captain comes to them. The last thing Craig Conroy wants to do is shake up the room or make the team believe they are disposable.
Verdict: If it comes down to it, sure. The Flames continue to add to their draft capital and move a forward out.
As much as I would like what Calgary is giving up, the return from Toronto isn’t worth nearly enough. Toronto doesn’t have the necessary assets Calgary is likely looking for. Acquiring Nazem Kadri isn’t the opportunity to trade all the players or prospects you’re over. The return would need to be enticing enough for Conroy to approach Kadri about it.
Verdict: Not a chance. I also don’t see a world where Conroy does anything to help Treliving and skimps on the return.
